Return to Winning Ways
The 2010s were a decade of highs and lows for Real Madrid Football Club. After a period of relative underachievement in the 2000s, the club returned to its winning ways in the 2010s, winning an impressive four Champions League titles and two La Liga titles. However, the decade was also marked by controversy, with the club facing criticism for its financial dealings and the departure of several high-profile players.
Real Madrid began the decade in strong form, winning the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) in 2011 and finishing second in the Spanish league. The following year, the club added to its trophy cabinet with a victory in the Spanish Super Cup and a fourth place finish in the league.
Record-Tying 10th Champions League Title
In 2013, Real Madrid reached the pinnacle of European football when it won its record-tying 10th European Cup/Champions League title. Led by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, the club defeated Atletico Madrid in a dramatic final to lift the trophy.
La Liga Title and Champions League Final
The following year, Real Madrid won its first La Liga title in four years, finishing three points ahead of Barcelona. The club also reached the Champions League final, but was unable to defend its title, losing to Atletico Madrid in a rematch of the previous year’s final.
Champions League Victory
In 2016, Real Madrid once again reached the Champions League final, and this time came away with the trophy, defeating Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout. The club also finished second in the Spanish league, behind Barcelona.
Third consecutive Champions League title
The 2017-2018 season was a mixed bag for Real Madrid. The club won its third consecutive Champions League title, defeating Liverpool in the final, but finished a distant third in the Spanish league. The following year, Real Madrid finished third in the league again, and was knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16.
Struggles Continue
The decade ended on a sour note for Real Madrid, as the club struggled to replicate its earlier successes. In 2019, the club finished third in the league and was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League.
Despite its ups and downs, Real Madrid remained one of the most successful and popular football clubs in the world during the 2010s. The club’s trophy cabinet continued to grow, and it maintained a reputation for producing some of the best players in the world. As the club looks ahead to the 2020s, it will aim to build on its successes and reclaim its place at the top of European football.
Hala Madrid!
